As a corresponding move, the club designated right-hander Paxton Schultz for assignment, opening a spot on the 40-man roster. Schultz made his major league debut with the Blue Jays last season, tying the record for most strikeouts by a reliever in his debut with eight versus the Seattle Mariners on April 20. In total, the 27-year-old made 13 appearances (two opener starts), pitching to a 4.38 ERA and 4.07 FIP with 28 strikeouts and eight walks.
After the final standard gameday practice squad elevations of the 2025 regular season, the three-game elevation limit resets for the postseason, so only players getting signed to the 53-man roster because of the limit will be noted today. Also, a number of teams are moving players to injured reserve to make room for practice squad players. Doing so will make it easier to sign the taxi squad guys to reserve/futures deals at the end of the season.
Back in 2012, the Blue Jays signed Ureña for a signing bonus of $725,000. By 2016, Ureña reached Double-A and ranked as the Blue Jays' seventh-best prospect. Most of Ureña's 2017 was spent in Double-A, but since he was on the 40-man roster, he was called up to the big leagues that season and got some playing time In their 2017 rankings, MLB Pipeline ranked Ureña as their 94th-best prospect, but his stint with the Blue Jays didn't go so great.
It's unfortunate Scott Laughton has been somewhat ineffective since he joined the Leafs. Brandon Carlo underwent foot surgery on December 3. When he was available, he looked a step slower and less physical than he was playing as a member of the Boston Bruins. In both cases salary retention were involved in the trade. If you're going to overpay for two players, you shouldn't be overpaying for a fourth-line center and bottom-pair defenceman.
Agnew joined as a legitimately interesting returner, a one-time All-Pro and one-time Pro Bowler who averaged 10.3 yards per punt return and 26.1 yards per kick return as recently as 2023. We knew health would be an issue for him, but as an occasionally useful gadget player on offense with a track record of quality work on special teams-he has six combined career touchdowns on returns!-Agnew seemed likely to help with the team's return woes.
While the trade occurred on Dec. 13, 2024, the deal did not become official until Dec. 15 because that's when Bryant became eligible to be dealt. Bryant opened up a roster spot that was evidently filled by Keshad Johnson, who was tearing up Sioux Falls on a two-way contract at the time. Since it was a non-simultaneous trade without any salary coming back, it also generated a small $2.1 million trade exception with the Heat.
Another slow Tuesday on the news front calls for a continuation of our Atlanta Braves player review series. This week, we take a look at Ozzie Albies, who ended his season with an unfortunate hand injury. Our draft target series continues with shortstop Eric Becker out of the University of Virginia. Gabe Burns of the AJC reported that Aaron Schunk will be in camp as a non-roster invite.
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals running back room was depleted even more Tuesday when Bam Knight was put on injured reserve with an ankle injury, ending his season with three games left. Knight suffered the injury in Sunday's 40-20 loss to the Houston Texans. Knight is the third Cardinals running back on injured reserve, joining James Conner and Trey Benson.
The Orioles have claimed outfielder Will Robertson off waivers from the Pirates, according to Jake Rill of MLB.com. There wasn't any previous indication Robertson was on the wire but it seems the Bucs tried to sneak him through waivers in order to open a 40-man spot. The Orioles swooped in to grab him, so Pittsburgh loses Robertson but they do open a roster spot, going from 39 to 38.
The Seahawks moved on from Quinton Bohanna today. After getting into a single game with the franchise in 2024, the defensive lineman has appeared in five games this year, collecting three tackles in 32 snaps. As Michael-Shawn Dugar points out, the Seahawks now have two open roster spots, an indication that any of , , and/or could be ready to return to the active roster.
Astros 40-man roster move incoming: The Astros are reportedly signing right-hander to a major league deal, bringing him over from the Korea Baseball Organization. The Astros have a full 40-man roster, so they'll need to make a move in order to accommodate their new signing. The most common way to accomplish that is simply by designating a player for assignment, but it's also possible Houston could look to work out a trade that clears 40-man roster space instead.
Center Kirby Dach is out of action and on injured reserve with a fractured foot. Center Alex Newhook is out of action with a broken ankle and is also on injured reserve. Left winger Patrik Laine is out with an abdominal issue and defenseman Kaiden Guhle is on injured reserve and will miss 8-10 weeks after adductor muscle surgery. The center depth took a massive hit and so did the offense with the loss of Dach and NEwhook.
A fifth-round pick out of Colorado State, Horton has caught 13 passes for 161 yards and five touchdowns. He also scored on a 95-yard punt return, the longest in team history. Horton fell to the fifth round after his final college season was cut short by a serious leg injury. He also missed time over the summer with a sprained ankle, but he still beat out veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling to be Seattle's third receiver.
